Oscars 2019: Who will win and who should in a wide-open race

(CNN)An unprecedented lack of consensus among the guilds representing actors, directors, writers and producers has flummoxed Oscar prognosticators, with more genuine uncertainty surrounding the best picture race than is usually the case this close to Sunday’s ceremony. Will win: “Green Book.” Should win: “Roma.” Despite considerable criticism of “Green Book” and various off-screen controversies, the fact-based historical film checks off a lot of boxes of past Oscar winners, and already has a Golden Globe and the Producers Guild’s top prize under its belt. What appear to be its principal competitors both face hurdles: “Roma,” not only because it’s a foreign-language film, but thanks to its release via Netflix, which continues to stubbornly withhold box-office data; and “Black Panther,” which has …

In the new Malaysia, signs of an older, uglier politics

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (CNN)In a swanky shopping mall underneath Kuala Lumpur’s iconic Petronas Towers, a traditional Chinese lion dance is attracting a crowd of delighted shoppers. But whether that will help new Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad unite the country behind a single Malaysian identity is up for debate. For decades, Malaysia has adopted a policy of institutionalized affirmative action favoring the ethnic Malay majority. And with Najib’s ousted party in opposition for the first time in its history, it stands accused by the opposition of stoking racial tensions among conservative Malays in order to gain ground. There are fears that racial and religious tensions could once again grip the nation. Neither Najib nor his party responded to CNN’s request for …

Kushner readies for spring launch of US Middle East peace plan

Washington (CNN)The United States is beginning to prep allies for a spring rollout of its plan for Middle East peace, with President Donald Trump’s senior adviser and son-in-law, Jared Kushner, outlining the timing and methodology of the plan at the Middle East security conference in Warsaw, Poland. The silence surrounding the plan has become a source of frustration and uncertainty that some diplomats worry could eventually scuttle the proposal’s chances. Fears about the plan Kushner has rebuffed major US allies’ requests to circulate the plan, one diplomat said, as he and his team are reportedly fearful that its contents would leak out and the proposal would be scuttled before they have a chance to roll it out.
