Smoking Cannabis As A Teen Linked To An Increased Risk Of Depression In Young Adulthood

Depression directly affects one in six adults over the course of a lifetime – and everything from pollution and artificial light to the bacteria that live in our gut could be (at least partly) to blame. Now, a new paper published in JAMA Psychiatry also links the mental illness to cannabis smoking as a teenager. Previous research has suggested that cannabis use moderately increases an individual’s risk of developing depression. While others have found no significant association when other variables are taken into consideration. Still others suggest cannabis use may actually decrease symptoms. The result is a mixed bag of results with no clear consensus of how cannabis affects mental health, at least as far as depression is concerned. Researchers from the University of Oxford, UK, and McGill University, Canada, have …

PM defeated over Brexit strategy

Media playback is unsupported on your device Media captionWhy did May lose another Brexit vote? Prime Minister Theresa May has suffered another Commons defeat after MPs voted down her approach to Brexit talks. MPs voted by 303 to 258 – a majority of 45 – against a motion endorsing the government’s negotiating strategy. The defeat has no legal force and Downing Street said it would not change the PM’s approach to talks with the EU. But Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn urged Mrs May to “admit her Brexit strategy has failed” and to come forward with a plan Parliament would support. The defeat came after the pro-Brexit European Research Group (ERG) of Conservative MPs announced it had taken a “collective decision” …

Acting EPA chief: Green New Deal ‘not really ready for prime time’

(CNN)Acting Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Andrew Wheeler jabbed the Democrats’ Green New Deal rollout as “not really ready for prime time” in an interview that aired Wednesday. “We need to make sure that we have a reliable, safe electricity supply for, for public health,” Wheeler said, adding, “It’s not really addressed in their Green Deal.” President Donald Trump has criticized the climate change push by progressive Democrats — lumping it in with a host of other progressive priorities as “socialism” at a rally on Monday night. The deal is also exposing divisions among Democrats who are running for president in 2020, as climate change is shaping up to be a central issue heading into the Democratic primary and general election …

California school rejects change of name tied to Confederacy

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – The Dixie School District in the California city of San Rafael has voted to keep its name despite criticism from some who say it is linked to the Confederacy and slavery. School officials said they would revisit the issue later. The school board voted Tuesday night after more than five hours of public testimony over changing the name of the 150-year-old district that supporters of keeping it say came from a Native American woman, Mary Dixie. Being a caregiver is one of the hardest jobs in the world. Photo by Jaddy Liu on Unsplash Whether it’s your profession, calling, or you’re rising to the challenge for a loved one, there’s no denying that taking care of another person full-time is an important and often unsung job. The work is mainly done behind-the-scenes, and as many caregivers will take you, most people don’t take the time to ask “How are you?” or “Is there something I can do for you?” They see caregivers as unflappable. That means the humanity is sometimes a little lost. But what’s it really like to be a full-time caregiver? That’s a question best answered by the people who’ve been there working tirelessly …

Hubble’s Weather Forecast Reveals Giant Storms On Uranus And Neptune

Seasons and weather events are not an exclusive feature of Earth. Many objects in our Solar System experience changes as they move around the Sun and while seasons last for months on Earth, on other planets they can last decades. Space probes and the Hubble Space Telescope have kept an eye on the planets and the telescope has recently discovered some new features of Uranus and Neptune. In observations collected over the last few years, Hubble has expanded our knowledge of Uranus’ polar vortex and discovered a new dark storm on Neptune. These interplanetary weather forecasts are part of the Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL), a long-term project that hopes to understand the decades-long changes on these two ice giant planets. …
