The Genderless Digital Voice the World Needs Right Now

Boot up the options for your digital voice assistant of choice and you’re likely to find two options for the gender you prefer interacting with: male or female. The problem is, that binary choice isn’t an accurate representation of the complexities of gender. Some folks don’t identify as either male or female, and they may want their voice assistant to mirror that identity. As of now, they’re out of luck. But a group of linguists, technologists, and sound designers—led by Copenhagen Pride and Vice's creative agency Virtue—are on a quest to change that with a new, genderless digital voice, made from real voices, called Q. Q isn’t going to show up in your smartphone tomorrow, but the idea is to …

Dont break up big tech regulate data access, says EU antitrust chief

Breaking up tech giants should be a measure of last resort, the European Union’s competition commissioner, Margrethe Vestager, has suggested. “To break up a company, to break up private property would be very far reaching and you would need to have a very strong case that it would produce better results for consumers in the marketplace than what you could do with more mainstream tools,” she warned this weekend, speaking in a SXSW interview with Recode’s Kara Swisher. “We’re dealing with private property. Businesses that are built and invested in and become successful because of their innovation.” Vestager has built a reputation for being feared by tech giants, thanks to a number of major (and often expensive) interventions since she …

This British weatherman interrupted a live debate on crime with a point we all need to hear.

Alex Beresford just couldn’t stay silent while listening to a Good Morning Britain debate about knife crime in the UK. With an increase in knife attacks over the past few years, debates over how to handle knife crime in the United Kingdom are common. Similar to gang-related gun violence in the U.S., the majority of victims and perpetrators of such crimes are black youths living in urban areas. And also like gun violence debates in the U.S., such discussions are too often held without representation from the communities being debated. That fact compelled weatherman Alex Beresford to interject from off camera during a live Good Morning Britain debate on knife crime. Police Federation chair, John Apter, was in the middle …

Electric Minivans at the Geneva Motor Show, and More Car News

It’s always fun when the auto show comes to town. Any town, really, but this week, it all went down at the Geneva Motor Show. Also this week, we looked into how scooter startups are thinking about labor and what tens of millions of dollars in lidar research got self-driving company Waymo. (Hint: a new revenue stream!) It’s been a week—let’s get you caught up. Headlines Stories you might have …

Video Footage Reveals Hairline Cracks In A Nuclear Reactor In Scotland

Video footage from inside one of the reactors at a nuclear power station in Scotland has revealed over 350 hairline cracks in the bricks, meaning it may make it impossible to shut down in an emergency.   Electrical Company EDF, who owns the Hunterston B power station in the Scottish county of Ayrshire, roughly 40 kilometers (24 miles) from Glasgow, released images and footage that shows cracks have formed inside the reactor’s graphite bricks, which are used in the core of nuclear reactors to slow down neutrons and keep the reaction stable. The bricks are also used to channel the carbon dioxide used to cool down the reaction. For this reason, they play an important part in making the facility safe. Cracks …

Do supermarkets know more about us than we do?

Analysing the decisions we make in the supermarket can help us understand the choices we make in other areas of our lives. Shaped by our choices To explore shoppers’ decision-making, we collected more than a million till receipts from one of the UK’s major supermarket chains over several years. Unsurprisingly, we discovered that people’s purchases reveal what they value and what their aims are. These range from very specific goals such as making a stir-fry, to general goals such as reducing their overall spending. Just Rent Your Clothes

My closet is in the cloud. That's not how I actually describe the dark, clothing-stuffed nook I tear through each morning. But at least a portion of my clothing is now chosen through an app. And I don't even own these garments: I pay a subscription fee to wear them for a month, then I trade them in for a new batch when my time is up. According to Rent the Runway cofounder and CEO Jennifer Hyman, this model—where we rent clothing, accessories, and soft goods that we at one point would have outright purchased—is going to change everything in the future. Over a year ago, I set a goal not to buy new clothes. If I felt the urge …
