New York politicians slam Amazon as it drops HQ2 plan

Like the initial HQ2 plan, today’s news that Amazon will no longer be setting up shop in Queens has been met with a flood of mixed reactions. Business advocacy and real estate are decrying the retail giant’s decision to pack up and leave. I know I’ve been flooded with responses from various corners all afternoon. Local politicians, on the other hand, appear to be placing the news squarely at the feet of Amazon . In a statement provided to TechCrunch, Mayor Bill de Blasio took Amazon to task for the move in a customary bit of New York saltiness. “You have to be tough to make it in New York City. We gave Amazon the opportunity to be a good …

Lizards Re-Evolve To Lay Eggs, After Having Already Evolved To Give Birth To Live Young

A family of lizards has achieved something very unexpected, evolving to give birth to live young, before going back to egg laying. Most remarkably, the zoologists who observed this think it is possible they rediscovered laying eggs multiple times. “Dollo’s Law states that once you lose something it is really hard to regain it. For example, species that adapt to living in caves and lose their eyesight are extremely unlikely to get it back,” explained Damien Esquerre, a PhD student at the Australian National University, in a statement. As with most biological “laws”, this one isn’t as rigorously enforced by nature as those of physics, but it is still a surprise to see it violated. However, Esquerre reports in Evolution that this …

Michelle Obama Got Roasted By Her Own Mom Betches

Moms – they refill your debit card comfort you in times of need, feed you in times of hunger, and roast you when it’s time to stay humble. This goes for teachers, coal miners, billionaires, and apparently even first ladies. We all remember Michelle Obama’s iconic Grammys appearance this week, but one person who was less than impressed was Michelle’s own mother, Marian Robinson. Like the true GOAT, Michelle shared a screenshot of her and Mrs. Robinson’s post-Grammys text exchange, and her mom definitely seemed less than impressed. A post shared by Feb 12, 2019 at 10:35pm PST Damn. The savagery. First of all, if Michelle Obama isn’t a “real star” then who the f*ck is? Second of all, I’m …

Scientists Have Spotted Mysterious Explosions In Our Atmosphere

According to a report by Sputnik News, a Russian satellite has detected mysterious light “explosions” in the Earth’s atmosphere. Cue that Ancient Aliens meme. (Even if it is almost certainly not aliens.) via GIPHY The unknown phenomenon was reportedly captured by Moscow State University’s Mikhailo Lomonosov satellite, but no paper has been published and there doesn’t appear to be an official press release from the university. So for now – and until there is – it is probably a good idea to take the news with a pinch of salt. Mikhail Panasyuk, the director of the Research Institute of Nuclear Physics at Moscow State University, spoke to Sputnik News about this strange observation. “It looks like we have encountered new physical phenomena,” Panasyuk said. “For example, …

George Clooney Warns Ominously That Meghan Markle Is Like Princess Diana

George Clooney blasted what he described as “irresponsible” treatment of the “I do want to say, they’re just chasing Who Magazine on Tuesday. “She’s been pursued and vilified.” Striking an ominous tone, the “Catch-22” star said, “We’ve seen how that ends.” Clooney was presumably referring to Princess Diana’s death in a car crash while being chased by paparazzi in 1997. recently highlighted the rash of stories that nit-pick her public appearances, tell tales about her alleged misbehavior within the royal family and report on the ongoing efforts of her father and sister to badmouth her. Stay Kind!!! it’s the new cool! She does not deserve that.” Last week an anonymous band of the royal’s friends urged an end to “ Clooney …

Smoking Cannabis As A Teen Linked To An Increased Risk Of Depression In Young Adulthood

Depression directly affects one in six adults over the course of a lifetime – and everything from pollution and artificial light to the bacteria that live in our gut could be (at least partly) to blame. Now, a new paper published in JAMA Psychiatry also links the mental illness to cannabis smoking as a teenager. Previous research has suggested that cannabis use moderately increases an individual’s risk of developing depression. While others have found no significant association when other variables are taken into consideration. Still others suggest cannabis use may actually decrease symptoms. The result is a mixed bag of results with no clear consensus of how cannabis affects mental health, at least as far as depression is concerned. Researchers from the University of Oxford, UK, and McGill University, Canada, have …

PM defeated over Brexit strategy

Media playback is unsupported on your device Media captionWhy did May lose another Brexit vote? Prime Minister Theresa May has suffered another Commons defeat after MPs voted down her approach to Brexit talks. MPs voted by 303 to 258 – a majority of 45 – against a motion endorsing the government’s negotiating strategy. The defeat has no legal force and Downing Street said it would not change the PM’s approach to talks with the EU. But Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn urged Mrs May to “admit her Brexit strategy has failed” and to come forward with a plan Parliament would support. The defeat came after the pro-Brexit European Research Group (ERG) of Conservative MPs announced it had taken a “collective decision” …

Acting EPA chief: Green New Deal ‘not really ready for prime time’

(CNN)Acting Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Andrew Wheeler jabbed the Democrats’ Green New Deal rollout as “not really ready for prime time” in an interview that aired Wednesday. “We need to make sure that we have a reliable, safe electricity supply for, for public health,” Wheeler said, adding, “It’s not really addressed in their Green Deal.” President Donald Trump has criticized the climate change push by progressive Democrats — lumping it in with a host of other progressive priorities as “socialism” at a rally on Monday night. The deal is also exposing divisions among Democrats who are running for president in 2020, as climate change is shaping up to be a central issue heading into the Democratic primary and general election …

A husband caring for his sick wife and 3 other stories on what caregiving is really like.

Being a caregiver is one of the hardest jobs in the world. Photo by Jaddy Liu on Unsplash Whether it’s your profession, calling, or you’re rising to the challenge for a loved one, there’s no denying that taking care of another person full-time is an important and often unsung job. The work is mainly done behind-the-scenes, and as many caregivers will take you, most people don’t take the time to ask “How are you?” or “Is there something I can do for you?” They see caregivers as unflappable. That means the humanity is sometimes a little lost. But what’s it really like to be a full-time caregiver? That’s a question best answered by the people who’ve been there working tirelessly …
